What is an Ostomy Bag Cover?

An ostomy procedure can completely change your life as you struggle with ways to conceal your new ostomy bag. Cover for the ostomy bag is essential to keep it secure, protecting the flange and stoma opening and providing discretion.

One of the simplest ways to start your worry-free ostomy life is with handy ostomy pouch covers. These covers are soft fabric covers that fully enclose your ostomy pouch. It is an easy way to provide discretion without having to purchase other ostomy appliances or accessories.

The Benefits of Ostomy Pouch Covers
An ostomy bag cover offers several benefits that make it easier to live with an ostomy pouch after surgery, including:
  • Wicking away moisture after a shower or swim to prevent skin irritation and bacterial infection
  • Plenty of covers to customize your ostomy appliance to your style preferences
  • A cooler option in summer than ostomy belts or ostomy wraps
If you like wearing your ostomy pouch on the outside, the ostomy bag cover can hide the contents of your bag effectively.

Types of Covers

Image

You can choose from a wide variety of pouch covers for specific needs that account for the position of the appliance and your preferences. However, the simplest option is a closed pouch with a fold on the back. It’s similar to traditional pillowcases.

Most pouches are completely opaque, but some do have little viewing windows that allow you to check the contents of your bag by sight. Another type of cover has an opening on the bottom that allows you to drain your ostomy bag without having to remove the pouch. Some types also provide Velcro straps, allowing you to keep your bag covered without fabric flapping around at the bottom of it.

Loaded covers tend to weigh a bit more than their simpler cousins due to the extra materials. However, they are much more convenient—you’ll quickly tire of removing a cover every time you need to change your bag during the day.

Choosing Your Ostomy Bag Cover

Finding the right cover is easy with the amount of choice available. There are plenty of considerations, and buying the right cover means less time applying for refunds or dealing with ill-fitting accessories. If you're looking for an excellent product that works for you, keep the following helpful tips in mind:

Choose the right size for your bag
There are many different sizes of ostomy bags, and you don't want a cover that's too loose or too tight. Try to find a bag that provides a secure fit for your ostomy bag when it's full and has the right size opening for your flange and stoma. If you're not sure about sizing, go for a bigger selection that you’ll be able to use even if it is slightly uncomfortable.
Choose appropriate materials
If you want something cool in the summer, choose light, breathable fabric that's easy to wear. If you want one that wicks away moisture, choose one made from polyester or plastic. You will also need to take into account your activity level because if you're active, you may need a more durable material that can handle abuse better.
Consider drainage
If you don't want to remove the cover every time you empty your bag, make sure to get one that opens at the bottom. It will add a bit of weight to the accessory, especially if you choose one that snaps closed. However, the convenience of the opening makes it an obvious choice for many patients.

Do Pouch Covers Work with Ostomy Support Belts?
Ostomy pouch covers may help with discretion, but they don't offer any support or security. These coverings don't help keep your bag close to your body, and they will experience wear and tear, so you'll constantly need to replace the cover.
A belt or wrap is still the most highly recommended appliance for an ostomy pouch. These keep your pouch closer to your body while providing excellent support. The support releases the tension on the stoma and surrounding skin areas.
A good belt can help women (and men) wear the clothing they love without worrying about the security of their ostomy bag. Unfortunately, it isn't easy to personalize a belt, which is where having an ostomy cover comes in handy.
Ostomy belts will still work correctly even if you have a cover on your pouch. Most patients choose to alternate between belts, wraps, and covers, depending on their mood and the weather. There are plenty of benefits to both, and having one of each appliance gives you a choice, control, and more confidence.

Dear Stealth Belt People, I just posted a very positive review on the WOCN list serve. Great job. My patient says he can’t live without his stealth belt.

Incredibly happy with my stealth belts. I had my ostomy surgery less than 6 months ago and now have two stealth belt pros that I wear almost 24/7. The belt truly supports the ostomy device and gives you the confidence to live your life normally. Thank you so much, Stealth Belt!

For those individuals needing to wear ostomy belts or ostomy wraps, the Stealth Belt is a fashionable and sleek belt designed to provide a comfortable, supportive and protective fit. Tucked close to the body, Stealth ostomy belts are virtually unnoticeable.

What is an ostomy belt?

For those individuals who have had a colostomy, urostomy, ileostomy or other similar procedures, ostomy bag belts provide support for the weight of medical appliances that are attached to the stoma. These colostomy wraps are carefully designed to wrap around the abdomen and securely attach to the ostomy bag. An ostomy belt creates security and support for ostomates and their colostomy bags.

Ostomy belts and ostomy wraps are considered “accessories” for ostomy appliances. Meaning they may or may not be a good option for your specific needs and are not necessarily a mandatory item to purchase. That said, ostomy belts and wraps may provide additional support, comfort and discretion that many individuals find beneficial.

Ostomy wraps and belts serve a number of purposes including:

  • Ensuring proper adhesion of your pouching system
  • Accentuating or enhancing a convex system
  • Providing a sense of security
  • Providing additional support
  • Improving comfort
  • Enhancing discretion

If you are concerned about any of the above factors or are experiencing any of the following you may want to consider researching ostomy belts and ostomy wraps further:

  • Consistent or regular leakage (especially at creases or edges)
  • Premature raising or lifting of the borders of your flange
  • Your system tends to shift or move excessively during daily activities

For many individuals, ostomy wraps and/or ostomy belts provide a sense of security and reduces the self-consciousness associated with their setup. In other cases, those that participate in sports or who enjoy swimming or baths may need the increased support these accessories can provide.

Additionally, these belts can be worn throughout the night for reduced risk of leakage when tossing and turning when sleeping.

There are a number of benefits to consider when looking at ostomy belts and ostomy wraps.

Benefits may include:

  • Pouch support
  • Reduce the need for adhesives and associated skin irritation
  • Aid in improving the seal when utilizing a convex skin barrier
  • Improved stealth and reduced noticeability, helping improve self-confidence
  • Protection of the colostomy or urostomy bag from added stability and support
  • Prevention of detachment from the stoma
  • Reduction of leakage and spills caused from physical movement of the bag
  • Improved comfort
  • And more…
